You can thank us if you make it back alive…
The 5 Things All Backpackers Should Carry
We’re going to skip the basics like food, water, and cash, so that we can get to some of the more inspired stuff.
1 – Mouldable Rubber
That’s right, you heard us. Sugru Mouldable Rubber, to be specific. Why? If you get a hole in your pack, in your water bottle, or if you drop your compass, this stuff can patch it back together again until you get to town. It’s waterproof, works like a glue, and is fully mouldable to whatever the situation demands from it. It could be the difference between life and death if you spring a leak in the middle of nowhere.
2 – The Straw
You know the one. This isn’t anything new. With a filter straw you can turn any watering hole into a bountiful drinking source. Turn even the dirtiest, grossest water into fully hydrating, toxin-free drinking water and you might never need to pay for your water again. We don’t recommend it though, but again, it might save your life in an emergency situation.
3 – The Paracord Bracelet
This product is a little newer than the straw, but the old pros in the army have been using it for years. This bracelet is a nifty little design that includes a compass, a survival knife, and a fire starting kit. There are multiple different designs to this that allow you to pick what you need most. We like the fire-starter and compass combo as it helps you get back to town while simultaneously allowing you some heat if you don’t make it. If you are going across country and aim to camp out – you guessed it – this product might save your life. Invest before you leave.
4 – Soap?
Nothing beats the old bar-of-soap-in-a-food-bag when you are travelling the world, but the Travel Buddy biodegradable travel wipes do come close. If you don’t have the excess water to use your soap, you can use a wipe instead. You really ought to put them in the bin but, on the off-chance you are out in the bush, they will degrade if you leave them there. Bonus, they can double up as toilet paper.
5 – Porta-Towel
Towels take up loads of room in your backpack. It’s only normal that they are always the thing that is wet when you need it most, too. Skip both these issues with a pocket-sized Eono towel. This highly absorbable microfibre towel comes in small, medium, or large, and each is fast-drying. The Eono cuts out the three or four hour wait until you can move on from the river because your towel isn’t dry. In a year or two, wild campers all over the world are going to own the full set of these.
Are You World-Travel Ready?
Do you think you are ready to hit the wilderness? Do you have everything you need? Have you checked your list and checked it twice? Then (and only then) are you ready to backpack around the world. Good luck out there… and don’t forget your toothbrush, either.
